MANILA, Philippines – At least 100 houses in Camarines Sur province were destroyed after a storm surge hit three coastal barangays, reports said.


In an interview, Office of the Civil Defense (OCD), regional director Bernardo Alejandro said that a storm surge was experienced in coastal barangays of Garchitorena town, approximately 500 kilometers from Metro Manila.

Based on the report conducted by Garchitorena Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC), 12 houses are totally damaged by the surge while 87 are considered partially damaged.

The official said that the storm surge is due to the effect brought by tropical depression Agaton.

Alejandro assured that their counterpart in several towns in Bicol conducted pre-emptive evacuation in several barangays particularly in coastal areas including the province of Masbate.

The official warned reminded fisher folk especially those who are using small sea crafts sailing due to gale warning raised by Pagasa.  

Meanwhile, about 400 passengers are still stranded in Matnog port due to turbulent seas.
