VATICAN CITY – Almost 400 priests have been fired and resigned by the Catholic Church due to sexual abuse, Vatican said.

Vatican official revealed that sacking these priests was made from 2011 to 2012, the last years of Pope Benedict XVI’s leadership.

During said date, the issue on Catholic priests abusing children circulated in news became a hot topic.

Vatican’s former top prosecutor of priests accused with sexual abuse Bishop Charles Scicluna said in an interview that 384 of co-priests left the priesthood.

He said that in 2011, 125 priests were fired by Vatican after being accused of abusing children while 135 of them decided to resign.

Scicluna said he could not explain why there is "exceptionally high" number of priests dismissed in 2011.

Meanwhile, reports said that Vatican is also scheduled to face United Nation (UN’s) investigation on same issue.
